From SB62 to London Climate Action Week 🚀

The Entertainment + Culture Pavilion team had a jam packed June and we are thrilled to share the details with you in this recap. From hosting 6 different activations at SB62 in Bonn to a whirlwind weekend in London for Climate Action Week, we have a lot of updates, reflections, and learnings to share. In this post-Covid world, nothing beats in-person events where we can forge new connections, hold nuanced discussions and step out of our digital echo-chambers!

SB62 Bonn: The Recap 🔄
Culture in the negotiations 🇺🇳
The E+C team closely followed the negotiations at SB62, with a particular focus on the Global Goal on Adaptation, ACE Dialogues, and the activities of the COP30 Presidency. We know the negotiations can sometimes feel like a technical nightmare (we can’t take any more UN abbreviations 🫠) so we’ve put together a bulletin of our key highlights from SB62 relating to culture, arts, and heritage.
📌 Global Goal on Adaptation: Cultural Heritage As An Indicator?
We participated in the Global Goal on Adaptation workshops, which focused on deciding which indicators (thematic areas of which were agreed on at COP29) need to be considered for adaptation plans. Along with our allies and partners, we welcomed the validation of cultural heritage being included as a valuable indicator, despite conversations about removing it.
📌 Following the ACE Dialogues
Our team closely followed the ACE Dialogues, attending and participating in various side events. We used our presence to advocate for culture being used as a framework for climate empowerment and led a workshop for the ACE Youth Hub.
📌 Side Event: Group of Friends for Culture-Based Climate Action
As Knowledge Partners of the GFCBCA, we were thrilled to attend their side event at SB62. With our partners at Midia Ninja and Clímax, we captured the event. Speakers included COP30 Youth Climate Champion Marcele Oliveira and representatives from UNESCO, ICOMOS, and more. 🔗 See a recap here.
📌 COP30 Presidency 30 Priorities for Belem
During SB62, the COP30 Presidency released a list of 🔗30 key priorities for Belém. In a landmark move, priority number 19, under the subcategory of Human + Social Development, focuses on culture and cultural heritage. We’re thrilled to see the COP30 Presidency take bold leadership in valuing the role that cultural heritage can play in climate action.
Bonn, baby, Bonn! Inside the campaign 🫦
After launching the #BonnBabyBonn campaign just before SB62 began, we made it our mission to bring renewed cultural relevancy to Bonn. Created by Doomates, and co-presented by The Climate Propagandist and the Entertainment + Culture Pavilion, the campaign landed in Bonn with a bang, starting with branded t-shirts and fliers.
Giving cultural leaders the mic 🎤
The heart and soul of E+C’s work at SB62 was to pass the mic to the arts, culture, and heritage leaders already doing the work on climate action. We made an effort to draw connections between local activists and initiatives in Bonn with those based in Brazil as we get closer to COP30.
Setting the Stage for Culture-Based Climate Solutions at SB62 on the Road to COP30 🗞️
We joined forces with Julie’s Bicycle, the Brazilian Ministry of Culture, COP das Baixadas, Bonn Climate Camp, and Climate Live to hold a press conference in the World Conference Centre to spotlight the growing global movement making culture impossible to ignore at SB62, COP30, and beyond. We were lucky enough to be joined by Alison Tickell, Vinicius Gurtler da Rosa, Jean Ferreira da Silva, Hajar Al-Beltaji and Frances Fox. Catch the full press conference on Youtube here.
Community Town Hall on Youth-led Culture-based Climate Solutions with Marcele Oliveira 🌍
At the Bonn Climate Camp, we gathered together youth leaders in dialogue with Marcele Oliveira (COP30 Youth Climate Champion) to share resources, exchange ideas, and present plans for COP30. As Belém approaches, we wanted to focus our efforts on building coalitions, partnerships, and alliances with other youth-led culture-based advocates and organisations. See a recap of the event here.
Showcasing the power of culture-based climate action 💪
Walking with Walking Forest 🌳
Climate negotiations can often be hectic, exhausting, and head-driven rather than heart-connected. That’s why Walking Forest’s guided nature walks from the Bundeskunstalle to the World Conference Centre Bonn were the peaceful refuge we all needed. Walking Forest, an art collective from the UK, took participants on guided walks that invited a new perspective to the SB’s, the chance to connect with nature and local cultural heritage.
Culture x Climate Forum: Bonn Edition 💡
Our headline event of SB62 was our Culture x Climate Forum - a staple E+C event that we first took to Baku at COP29. We welcomed over 100+ leaders from the climate, culture, arts, and heritage community to join us for an afternoon of programming. The forum kicked off with opening remarks from the City of Bonn Deputy Mayor Nicole Unterseh and Technical Officer at the UNFCCC and Brazilian artist Alex Paris.
We then heard from Selina Kahle (Program Lead, Culture4Climate), Gab Meija (National Geographic Explorer), and Jean Ferreira da Silva (Director of COP das Baixadas) in the Exploring Ecosystems for Culture-Based Climate Solutions, moderated by Daniel Cervenka (CEO + Founder of The Convergence).
For the rest of the afternoon, participants attended two rounds of interactive workshops hosted by the likes of Climate Live, Midia Ninja, Icarus Complex Magazine, and ACE Observatory, and Comite COP30. We loved seeing attendees embrace the opportunity to learn new skills, make new connections, and forge new collaborations. A huge thank you to every person who attended!
A Whirlwind Weekend: London Climate Action Week 🇬🇧
After rounding off our work in Bonn, members of the E+C team headed to London to catch the tail end of Climate Action Week. A shift in energy from Bonn, London offered an opportunity to recharge, connect with community, and keep the momentum from SB62 burning brightly.
Meeting the COP30 Presidency at Shakespeare’s Globe 🇧🇷
Samuel, Julie, Katherine, and Maxine were lucky enough to join the COP30 Presidency at world-renowned cultural heritage site Shakespeare’s Globe on the River Thames for an afternoon of exploring the concept of ‘A Global Mutirão’. The concept of Mutirão is when communities come together to work towards a shared goal and has deep connections to the Indigenous traditions of Brazil. We loved the use of this cultural nexus by the COP30 Presidency to call for the global community to act together to deal with the climate crisis.
Climate Community Picnic 🥪
At the end of a busy week, a dose of community togetherness was what the E+C team needed and our climate friends delivered. In London Fields park, a global group of climate advocates came together to share food and enjoy the sunshine. Away from the rigidity of many climate week events, our climate community picnic offered a chance to forge meaningful personal connection, allyship, and solidarity.
